‘Don’t talk about Savarkar’; Maharashtra Congress Leaders’ Warning To Rahul, Rahul Ignores; Report

Mumbai: Hindutva theorist V.D. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s statements on Savarkar have reportedly ignored the advice of the state Congress leadership in Maharashtra.

The mention of Savarkar’s letter in the speeches made in Maharashtra during the Bharat Jodo Yatra is an indication that the state leadership is unhappy. The news is reported by The New Indian Express quoting sources in the Maharashtra Congress.

According to the report, three senior leaders of the party had instructed Rahul not to mention anything about Savarkar.

The state leadership is worried that Rahul’s remarks will damage the relationship with the Shiv Sena.

The reaction of Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray is behind these concerns. Leaders of the state unit wanted to avoid controversy.

Rahul was specifically asked to focus only on the issues of unemployment, inflation and agrarian crisis,’ a Congress source told The Indian Express.

Earlier Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray was invited to Bharat Jodo but he did not participate.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena had hinted that Mahavikas Aghadi would leave the alliance following Rahul Gandhi’s remarks.

Party spokesperson Sanjay Rawat responded that Rahul Gandhi’s comment on Savarkar was serious for the Shiv Sena. We believe in Savarkar’s ideology. He said that the Congress should not have raised the Savarkar issue at this stage.

The leadership is of the view that the continuation of this alliance will put the party in crisis. Party MP Arvind Sawant also said that party president Uddhav Thackeray will take the crucial decision soon.

Rahul Gandhi said that Savarkar is a symbol of BJP and RSS and started writing the mercy petition when he was in jail in Andaman for two or three years. Rahul responded by showing a copy of the apology written by Savarkar to the British.
