Regular screening can detect health disorders: There are many health problems in modern times. If these diseases are detected at an early stage.. the treatment will be easy.. the survival of the person will also increase. However, scientists at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center have revealed several key facts. A blood test (gallery) can now detect up to 50 types of cancer in healthy people after their initial blood tests, experts have revealed. Some of these cancers include breast, bladder, urethra, uterus, colon, rectum, kidney, pancreas, and prostate.
An immunoglobulin test (IgG) determines the levels of certain immunoglobulins or antibodies in the blood. Generally, IgA, IgM, IgG are done to detect, monitor immune deficiencies, assess the risk of autoimmune diseases like lupus, celiac disease.
However, these are not the only tests to determine if a person has any illnesses or diseases. There are many more… said Dr. Jayantha Thakuria, Associate Director, Internal Medicine & Rheumatology, Accord Super Specialty Hospital, Faridabad. Jayantha spoke exclusively to News9 about this. A doctor may recommend several tests to rule out or prevent a person from developing the disease.
“We all know that BRCA test is done for breast cancer. ESR Test – Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate – A blood test that reveals inflammatory activity in the body. This is an important test because if the reading is more than 100, it indicates diseases like spinal tuberculosis, multiple myeloma. Another test that should be done is the hs-CRP test. This is used to determine a person’s risk of developing coronary artery disease. This test is usually done during peak hours. It is highly recommended even during the COVID-19 pandemic,” explained Dr. Thakuria.
Even simple tests can detect illnesses
Dr. Thakuria says several common tests are done to detect many other chronic conditions. A simple urine test can tell if a person has kidney disease. If the protein count in the test is high, it may indicate the beginning of kidney related problems.
“Some tests have to be taken once every six months to a year. Others should be done only after doctor’s prescription. Sugar levels, kidney function, liver function test, urine routine, chest x-rays… can be done routinely,” advises Dr. Thakuria.
Age related tests..
After a person reaches a certain age certain tests are required. “The most common test among people overseas is a rectal exam for men over 60 to check for colon cancer. This way any difference can be detected at an early stage. This is done for better survival. Then there was the Dexa-scan. This is also an age-related test that should be done if prescribed by a doctor. People with frequent fractures are advised to undergo this test. Heart CT, echocardiogram, and ECG are the tests that people above 40 years of age should undergo every year,” said Dr. Thakuria.
Illness – family history test required
If there is a family history of illnesses such as heart disease, thalassemia, osteoporosis or certain cancers such as breast cancer, everyone in the family should opt for early screening to reduce the impact of the disease on the next generation.
“If either of the parents is thalassemia positive, the child born to them should be tested for the disease as soon as possible. If there is a history of heart disease, family members should be screened regularly after puberty. ie tests like 18 troponin T test or Holter monitor test (record heart rhythm). Is such a person an at-risk heart patient or have any other problems..? Dr. Thakuria said.
